The term digital nomad is a much-bandied term nowadays, considering that the world is a global village. Any country, city or village that has the requisites to enable you to work from the location of your choice can actually be your home. Of course it does take some planning if youÔÇÖve decided to go for a change of avatar and become a ÔÇÿdigital nomadÔÇÖ.

However, if you were to choose to set up base in a city, which city would you choose and why. We have chosen top 6 locations based on the cost of living, internet connectivity, weather, safety and fun.
Given the above, the cities that emerged as the most desirable for a digital nomad are as follows.

1. Chiang Mai, Thailand ÔÇô itÔÇÖs a perfect combination of low cost living, great culture, good weather, friendly people and of course very good wi-fi. Some digital nomads whoÔÇÖve made Chiang Mai as their base say that you can actually live on USD 600 to 1500, a month. But it does rank low on night life, so itÔÇÖs really meant for those who are looking for some peace and not the hustle and bustle of city life.

2. Berlin, Germany - With great co-working spaces, a friendly vibe, competitive prices of apartments and rented spaces, fantastic night life and superb cafes, Berlin is a great place to set up base as a digital nomad. ItÔÇÖs a perfect place for ideation and needless to say, the internet connectivity is really great.

It has a lot going on, in terms of fun, activities, culture and communities, but it is an expensive place. How Brexit is going to affect it is unsure, and so, it had got 3rd place in our list.

4. Ubud, Bali ÔÇôFrom the quality of air, weather, cost of living, fun, friendliness to foreigners, it all seems to work well for Ubud, Bali.

5. Madrid, Spain ÔÇô You could actually rent out a 1 BHK apartment for about USD 750 per month. The cost of living for expats is a little less than USD 2000 per month and is rated very highly on parameters including safety, internet, quality of life and night life. If you know Spanish, it would definitely help, but you could always learn and pay for it with a prepaid travel card that you can top up whenever you need.

6. Lisbon, Portugal - From recent travelogues published by digital nomads, Lisbon comes out as one of the most preferred destinations for a digital nomad. It scores really well on most parameters including friendliness to foreigners, racial tolerance, English speaking, and so on. Some reports say that itÔÇÖs actually quite comparable to certain Asian cities in terms of cost of living and prices and for those looking for a work-life balance, this could be a place to settle in.

And remember, with great internet connectivity, you donÔÇÖt really have to worry about travelling, sending money home, shopping or using ATMs, because you can be safe and prudent with travel cards that help you use it the way you want it and top up when necessary.
