According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the numbers of global air passengers are expected to reach 7 billion by 2034, which is more than double the 3.3 billion who flew in 2014. No surprises there! The 4 C’s of air travel – conventional, convenience, comfort and competitive costs – help in attracting more frequent fliers.

If you are planning to be a jet setter this year, here are some tips that may help you make your air travel easier and more enjoyable.

Air travel tips

Fly Non-stop

The cost, duration and comfort of your air trip depend on your choice between non-stop and direct flights. Know the difference between the two. Non-stop flights do not have intermediate stops, while direct flights may include stops at intermediate points, with no change in flight numbers.

Optimally Manoeuvrable Luggage

Travel luggage goes though enormous battering in the cargo section. Invest in a hammer-proof, durable baggage with sturdy double-spinner wheels, combination TSA lock, and telescopic handles on both the top and side.

Locate Your Luggage

Tag your luggage and label them with contact information. This comes in handy when you need to locate or manage your luggage in conveyor belt collection areas, lost luggage areas, luggage storage facilities, in taxis and hotel lobbies. For the sake of safety and security, list an official address (like your office, local community centre, etc) or a pre-determined drop-off point.

Early Bird Benefit

The early bird gets the worm. Or in this case the best opportunities for flight rates, upgrades, seat allocation, and more! Try to be at the airport early to enjoy the experience and go through the airport formalities at your own pace. Ask for any hotel bookings, alternative flights, food or any other amenities you might need. Don’t hesitate to post relevant updates on social media, to boost your chances of getting served.

Ease the Stress

High stress levels could be triggered from the boredom in noisy airplanes and airport. Listening to your favourite music or watching a great movie could drastically bring down the strain. Carrying your own noise-cancelling head phones, interesting books/book-friendly gadgets, travel games, art book, greatly helps, especially when travelling with children. A travel pillow is also recommended!

Loyalty Rewarded

Sign-up for airline loyalty programmes that will earn you extra miles, points pegged to monetary value, choice seating, priority check-in, security and boarding, sometimes even zero baggage fees. Preferential treatment is provided to passengers covered under loyalty programmes during upgrades, delays or cancellations.

Hydrate the Jet Lag

Our bodies get confused when time zones and body rhythms change. Water is the best hack to ease the jet lag. Go with the flow (literally). And watch your eating and sleeping schedules. Boost your endorphins with some on-the-go exercises and stretch your body to release the travel kinks. You could also invest in ‘Re-Timer’, the time control glass that stimulates the part of the brain responsible for the circadian rhythms.

Choose Your Seats

There are several websites that help you find the best flight seats, compare low airfares and in-flight amenities, with real-time flight status alerts. Getting familiar with them will help you choose or ask for a good seat, especially during long-duration flight journeys.

Being polite and nice to flight attendants is the golden rule for a pleasant travel experience. Never underestimate what a cheerful please and thank you could fetch you!
