ÔÇ£Tell me about yourself?ÔÇØ This is the most common question asked anywhere right from a professional interview, casual date or when your new buddy wants to get to know you!

Though it sounds like the simplest question, this is the toughest to answer. Do you get confused and anxious when someone pops this question and end up rambling about your school projects or giving way too many personal details? The reason behind this is your lack of knowledge about yourself.

According to Socrates, "To know thyself is the beginning of wisdom".   Yes, self-knowledge helps you achieve success in personal and professional life. It helps you sculpt your surrounding and choose life partners, friends, careers and hobbies according to your traits. This knowledge gives you the power to make yourself a valuable asset and not just a head-count liability, anywhere.

So how do you get to know yourself?  Here are a few VITAL S you need to understand.

Define your personal core values.  Common values include truth, integrity, diplomacy, moderation etc.  If you not able to identify them at once, follow this simple tip. Sit in a quiet peaceful space with zero distractions, for atleast an hour. Write down your greatest achievement, failure, and identify commonalities between them. Also jot down ways in which such failure could have been avoided. Do this exercise with someone you trust, so that they can guide you to understand your current value system. Get their honest feedback.

As Mahatma Gandhi once said ÔÇ£Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny." So ensure you develop good habits.

Identify your area of interest. This may refer to your passion or hobby that has captured your attention over a sustained period of time. Several people have built their successful careers and life around their areas of interest. Infact the job fulfilment, satisfaction and happiness levels are higher when your job is based on your area of interest.

Know About Me

Temperament does not refer to your tendency to burst into anger at the drop of a hat. It deals with aspects of your innate personality that have been genetically inherited as part of your DNA. Analysing your temperament helps you understand if you are an introvert or an extrovert, talker or a doer, impulsive or careful planner!

Look at your day- to-day activities from a third personÔÇÖs perspective. Analyse when you have performance peaks and dips. You can learn more about yourself by identifying a pattern here.

L-Life goals

Do some soul searching and find out whatÔÇÖs your lifeÔÇÖs mission.┬á Set specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely (SMART) goals for yourself. Make the timeframe for goals realistically short, so that you can keep track and constantly measure your progress.

Identify and acknowledge your strengths to gain self-confidence. Look not only for strengths in abilities or skills but also in character.

To take this quest to a higher level, you can go on a solo trip to the hills or into the forest to meditate and find yourself. ItÔÇÖs very important to be true to yourself, no matter what. Only then you will be able to find out who you are!
